The aim of this course is to develop students’ intercultural competence, i.e., the awareness of and sensitivity to aspects of intercultural communication, the ability to analyze intercultural situations, and the ability to participate in interactions with people with different linguistic or cultural backgrounds. In particular, this course focuses on the CEE region. In a series of interactive workshops, the participants will explore, analyze, and reflect on examples of intercultural communication from the CEE region that will be presented in the form of authentic spoken and written excerpts, visual materials, and critical incidents. Participants will also create their own portfolios exhibiting selected moments of their intercultural competence development, comprising diary entries from field trips in the CEE region, their own critical incident, analyses of selected studies addressing intercultural communication, and a personal reflection.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain what intercultural communication is and discuss specific aspects of intercultural communication in the CEE region
- Analyze and interpret excerpts of intercultural communication from the CEE region
- Explain what intercultural competence is and how one can develop it
- Use different tools to analyze and interpret intercultural communication
- Select, employ, and evaluate communication strategies to engage in intercultural communication in the CEE region
This is a PI course, therefore Attendance is mandatory in at least 80% of in-class sessions.
The course will involve interactive teaching methods, including cultural simulations and group discussions, as well as short input sessions.
Individual portfolio (50 points), group task (20 points), participation (30 points)
Grading scale
100-90 % - "sehr gut", 89-80 % - "gut", 79-70 % - "befriedigend", 69-60 & - "genügend". Less than 60 % - "nicht genügend".
