In these two ~3hrs Tutorials and entry exam, the students will repeat the prerequisites learnt in previous courses such as

- BIS 1 (BaWiSo/BaWiRe), Business Analytics (BBE)

- Introduction to Statistics (BaWiSo/BaWiRe), Quantitative Methods (BBE)

necessary to qualify for the SBWL "Data Science". You will also discuss and learn about more general skills necessary for a "Data Scientist", such as analytical, logical thinking and problem solving.

Learning outcomes

Based on practical examples and 2 3hrs repetitoria, students shall be prepared to a) recall the necessary prerequisites in terms of data formats, data Structures and data security and data protection as covered by BIS 1, as well as basic statistics. Additionally, we will prepare the students to solve creative tasks on how to tackle data-related problems and to assess their analytical thinking skills.

Attendance requirements

Tutorials:

  • Di,    30.08.2022 13:00-15:30 (Online)
  • Mi,    31.08.2022 13:00-15:30 (Online)

Assessment

This entry course for the SBWL "Data Science" consists of two (attendance optional) tutorial blocks à 3hrs and concludes with an (obligatory) 90min written, MC entry exam that will be held on Tue,  6.09.2022 08:00-10:30 as an online exam

The exam will consist of 3 blocks (8 MC questions each):

  • Betriebliche Informationssysteme/ BA1
  • Statistics
  • Analytical Thinking

Passing the exam is obligatory to enter the SBWL "Data Science".

Further information on the SBWL's admission process, also regarding the "GreenCard" regulation to the SBWL, can be found at the SWBL Webpage, cf. https://www.wu.ac.at/dpkm/teaching/sbwl-data-science.

ATTENTION: Students who want to make use of the "Greencard-Option" should send a confirmation (Sammelzeugnis) of the nessesary grades in advance to datascience@ai.wu.ac.at  with the subject line "Greencard SBWL Data Science".

Recommended previous knowledge and skills

It is recommended to have passed positively the courses

  • Betriebliche Informationssysteme (BIS 1)  or Business Analytics 1   and
  • Statistics or Quantitative Methods

from the Common Body of Knowledge (CBK) of the Bachelor Programme of BusinessEconomics and Social Sciences or the English Bachelor Programme in Business Economics.

Particular parts (mostly, chapters 4, 9, 10, 11) of the Book “Wirtschaftsinformatik”, 12th edition by Hans Robert Hansen / Jan Mendling / Gustaf Neumann.

as well as from the course material of "Statistics" (all chapters) will be repeated in the tutorials.

Additionally, we recommend skills such as analytical thinking requires from a Data Scientist, which we will train with for instance typical "interview questions" from Data Science companies. Some examples will be presented in the tutorials.

Admission - Expiration:

If you do not register for courses 1+2 after being admitted by the registration deadline, we will offer the spot for this SBWL to the next persons on the waiting list and you have to re-apply in the following semester, if you are still interested in enrolling in this SBWL.

Also, not passing the courses of the 1st semester may result in being unregistered from the SBWL under the following circumstances:

If both course 1 and course 2 are negative or not graded in the first semester after you have been admitted, you will loose your spot in the SBWL and you will have to re-apply in the following semester, if you are still interested in enrolling in this SBWL.

If at least one of course 1 or course 2 is passed positively in your first semester after being admitted, you will remain in the SBWL.

This rule applies to all students applying for the next upcoming application deadline; we reserve the right to adapt this regulation in future iterations of the SBWL.
