International Business is a core course in many business programs. These courses address a wide variety of environmental and organizational aspects which, when considered overall, help us to understand several questions such as: 1) Why some organizations thrive and others struggle in the global marketplace, 2) why do firms go abroad? 3) How do they manage their foreign operations? and 4) how can they innovate in the global market place?

In this course, we will recapitulate the main building blocks of international business and management. We then focus particularly on the fact that, nowadays, international business happens in the context of a much more digitalized world than ever before. Thus, we ask: how does digitalization shape international business? What are the opportunities that emerge and how can pitfalls in the digital economy be managed?

Learning outcomes

Students on completion of the course will be able to…

  • … understand, apply, and synthesize the principal concepts, frameworks, and techniques of international business
  • … generate and assess strategic options for internationally active firms
  • … analyze and evaluate complex international business problems with incomplete information.
  • … connect the features of the digital economy to international business and global strategy opportunities and challenges
Attendance requirements

Minimum attendance is 80% of total class time. Note also that any absence affects your participation grade.

Teaching/learning method(s)

The course method blends lectures, discussions, videos, and presentations. Substantial classroom discussion is encouraged and expected.

In addition, there are some optional readings allocated to some sessions. Key ideas of the optional readings are relevant for the exam, but no details will be asked.

Overall, students will be assessed on:

  • Their knowledge of the content domain of international business in the context of digital transformation
  • Their ability to understand the global strategic issues, to use the appropriate analytical techniques, and develop recommendations for how to solve them
  • The quality of the presentations and contributions

The final grade is 100% individual and will be based on the following elements:

  1. Participation in class (20%)
