Lecturecasts
At the application Lecturecasts you can find your lectures which you have recorded via Lecture Recording before WS 2023/24. Additionally, you can upload external videos and allow students to comment them. You can also give permission to the students to upload own videos.
Video recordings NEW
As of 2022, WU employees and students have access to the "Planet eStream" media platform, which can be accessed with your regular WU user ID at https://planetestream.wu.ac.at. Upload MS Teams and Zoom meeting recordings, lecturer recordings or other video and audio projects and share them with selected people, groups and courses in LEARN and Canvas WU. How do I make a recording of my lecture?
Lecture recording is conducted via MS Teams or Zoom since August 2024. More information about recording in the lecture rooms can be found in the Medienguide.
How do I publish a lecture cast?
To make a lecture cast available for your students, you have to publish it.
- In the list of lecture casts, click at the icon for the chosen video.
- Confirm your choice with "Veröffentlichen“.
After publication, students have access to the lecture cast.
How do I upload an external video?
You can upload an external video in the lecturecasts section. Video file size may not exceed 2048MB. Standard formats such as avi, mp4, flv, wmv are supported.
- Click "New" / "Upload video" in the menu.
- Choose a file and confirm with OK. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, uploads can take from 1 to 10 minutes to complete. A progress bar indicates the remaining time.
In case two videos are uploaded, audio will come from the first file and this will be treated as the lecturer signal in the player, while the second file will be the slides signal.
Video Editor
The video editor offers you the opportunity to edit lecture recordings and further video recordings directly in MyLEARN. The video recordings which were edited in this way can still be played with the video player "Paella Player". The editing options are as follows:
Crop: Cutting the video at the beginning and at the end
Delete Segment: remove parts of the video recording (where ever in the recording)
Chapter: build chapters and give them titles.
How do I open the Video Editor?
Next to your unpublished videos in the application "Lecturecasts“, you can find the icon of the video editor . Click on it to open the video editor of the chosen video.

Navigate to the video which you want to edit.

Click on the right side, next to the video, on the icon "Video Editor“ .
Now, you can edit recordings with the video editor.
How do I crop video recordings at the beginning and at the end?
The video editor enables you to crop the recording at the beginning and at the end.
- In the video editor, open the tab "Crop“.
- On the timeline, drag the left slider to the position where the recording should start.
- On the timeline, drag the right slider to the position where the recording should stop.
- Click the button „crop“.
NOTE: Use the command to undo the crop.
The time for the start of the video and for its end is adjusted according to your crop. Accordingly, the total length of the recording is shorter. You can see this in the information at the bottom of the video window and below the video window, displayed as
How do I make Segments?
The video editor enables you to divide the video into segments. These segments can be transformed to chapters in a fruther step.
Add a segment marker:
- In the video editor, open the tab "Segments“.
- Directly in the video window, go to the point where you want to add a new segment marker.
- Click on the button .
- Check the newly created segment by clicking on it in the list. The segment is now shown at the timeline. If necessary, shift the markers for beginning and end of this segment to adapt the time of beginning and end.
- Click the button „merge segments“ if you want to merge two segments again. This removes the segment marker which has separated the two segments from each other. The two segments are merged to a single segment.
- To remove all segment markers which you have created, klick at the button . Thus, all segment markers are removed again from the video.
The first segment cannot be removed or changed. It marks the beginning and the end of the whole video.
If the video is divided into segments, there is no change in the total length of the video.
How do I cut a video recording in the middle?
The video editor allows you to cut out segments within the recording.
Choose the segment which you want to remove:
- In the video editor, open the tab "Segments“.
- Directly in the video window, go to the point, where you want to start cutting.
- Click the button „new segment“.
- Now, directly in the video window, go to the point, where the cut should end.
- Click the button „new segment“.
Cut out the segment:
- In the list of all segments, click at the segment which you want to remove.
- Check your selection in the timeline and, if necessary, adapt beginning and end of the target segment by shifting the segment markers.
- Click at „delete segment“ to remove the chosen segment from the recording.
NOTE: Use the command to make the cut undone.
The total length of the video has been shortened. You can check this using the information „Actual video length“ below the video window. The segment that was cut out does not appear in the video any more.
How do I create chapters?
The video editor enables you to present your recording divided into chapters.
- In the video editor, open the tab "Chapters“.
- Check the segments, which you have defined before, in the overview.
- Name the chapters using the fields "Chapter title“.
- Mark the chapter whose thumbnail should be displayed as preview picture of the video with „show as title slide“.
- Confirm your entries with „Save and Exit“.
You will return to the overview page of the application "Lecturecasts“. The last edited video is in „Unpublished videos“ at the top of the list. The video is provided, but not released yet. It has the name suffix „(edited)“.
If you click on the video you get to the player view. The chapters which you have defined are shown below the video.
Go back to the index page of "Lecturecasts" (top menu), and use the "settings" icon next to the video to rename and/or publish it.
Troubleshooting
I have lecturecasts in the course repository. Why are these not displayed in the course?
If a course is linked to a repository course, the lecture casts of the repository course can be inherited by the associated courses. However, this requires that the lecture casts are "published" in the repository course!
